Srisailam- The Kailash of South.

Finally, I have completed my plan to visit 12 Jyotirling or Dwadash Jyotirling. Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy in Srisailam is my first one. This is the second Jyotirlinga after Somnath.

” श्रीशैल शिखर दृष्ट्वा पुनः जन्म न विद्यते । “

“śrīśaila śikhara dṛṣṭvā punaḥ janma na vidyate ।”

As per our scriptures, it is said that, By seeing the śikhara or the peak of Srisailam, (one releases himself from the cycle of birth and death) one is not born again.”

In Srisailam the name of Shiva is Mallikarjuna Swamy. In India, it is considered the Somnath is the first Jyotirlinga. During the finalization of Srisailam visit plan, suddenly one thing clicked in my mind that it is also a SatiPeeth / Shakti Peeth out of 51Shaktipeeth in India. Devi Bhramarambika Temple is within the main campus of the Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple. Devi Bhramarambika is one of the eighteen Maha Shakthi. Devi Bhramarambika is also known as Bhramari Devi – The Goddess of Black BeesMaybe by the divine grace, I have started with both the plan at a time 12Jyotirling and 51Satipeeth.

Srisailam is in Andhra Pradesh. Presently previous Andhra Pradesh is split into two state Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Andhra Desam is also known as Trilinga Desam or Trilinga Kshetras because of three major Saymbhu Shivling are these two states (earlier Andhra Pradesh). These three Sayambhu Shivlings are Bheemeswaram, which is in Draksharamam; Kaleswaram near Karimnagar which is presently in Telangana and Mallikarjuna Swamy at Srisailam in Kurnool District which is in AP.

In Telugu Shiva is called Shivudu and November is the very auspicious month in Telugu Calendar. These I came to know from local people.

Srisailam is around 225 KM from Hyderabad MGBus Terminus. I first came to Hyderabad by Indigo flight. Indigo is one of the best low-cost airlines in India. I booked my ticket with yatra.com, got some very low price.

Previously I booked my Bus ticket through TSRTC online booking portal. There it was mention Super Luxury Non-ACBus, but looking at the bus I was really shocked. The Bus is looking very savvy but it is at least comfortable during my journey. Buses are from the early morning. At the time of return, I was booked my bus ticket from Srisailam Bus Station. Through you can book the ticket by REDBUS.

It took almost 6hrs to reach Srisailam. But the journey was amazing. AP Government maintains roads very nicely. The picturesque beauty of nature and finally the Ghat Road (Mountainous Road) and the Tiger Reserve Forest are awesome. Srisailam Bus stop very nearer to temple and walking distance to Devasthanam guest houses. I would suggest if you are a solo backpacker please go by TSRTC Buses or if you are a group hire a cab. If you go by Cab, then it will be better to take the snap of the natural beauty.

This ghat road is really dangerous, so many hairpin bend and curves. Solo Biker and Car driver be careful and follow road directions.

Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple is situated on a flat top of Nallamalai Hills. This has a prominent role in Sanatana Dharma, Hindu as well as Buddha Dharma.  The entire Srisailam is under Srisailam Devasthanam. I have seen only private hotel Haritha. But the Devasthanam Guest Houses online booking facilities are very good and different budget package is available. Rooms are also very good and with moderate charges. There is a Hostel which is maintained by devasthanam, that also you may book priorly by online. You may get that on spot booking also depending upon the rush.

You may also contact with this Tripadvisor link

Every day early morning Avishekam is there in the temple. You may go through a free line or paid line. For paid queue please contact to temple office. Dress code is the factor to visit Jyotirling. So please clarify and confirm previously from temple office.

For food there are restaurants, but I used to take food every day from Annadanam Centre within temple campus. Excellent food quality. Please don’t forget to take the Laddu Prasad from prasad distribution counter.

If you are a spiritual tourist must visit Sakshi Ganapati after visiting Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy temple.

You will get a local CAB to visit nearer places like
Sikharam and Hatkeswaram, Phaladhara-Panchadhara, Sakshi Ganapati, Istakameswari, Akka-mahadevi caves,  Gupta Mallikarjunam, Kailasdwaram etc.

My experiences about these places I will post separately under Srisailam series. Spiritual readers, please wait for my post for the experience of meditation in the huge energy vortex of Srisailam.

This is for travelers. Most of the booking link and Map I have mentioned here. For the spiritual reader please wait. I promise I will share my magnificent experience in a separate post. If you need any assistance I will be happy to help you.

Have a pleasant stay in Srisailam.

  1. Wonderful site you have here but I was curious about if you knew of any message boards that cover the same topics discussed here? I’d really like to be a part of community where I can get feed-back from other experienced people that share the same interest. If you have any recommendations, please let me know. Thanks!
